Here's all you need to know for your Engagement shoot...

Congratulations on your engagement! I am so glad you're here, this is an important step into wedding planning. Your engagement photos will be so useful you'll be glad you booked the session. This is your opportunity to showcase your new exciting adventure with amazing photos for your save-the-dates, wedding website, or simply to adorn your home.


But if you're feeling a little unsure about how to prepare, don't worry! We've got you covered. This guide is packed with tips to help you feel confident, relaxed, and ready to absolutely shine during your session.

How do I dress?

Your outfits play a big role in the overall feel of your photos. The goal is to look like yourselves, but the best version of yourselves!

  • Coordinate, Don't Match: Aim for outfits that complement each other in terms of style and color palette, rather than matching exactly. Think about colors that look good together and fit the season and your chosen location.
  • Comfort is Key: You'll be moving around, sitting, and maybe even snuggling up close. Choose clothes you feel comfortable and confident in. If you're tugging at your dress or your jeans are too tight, it'll show in your expressions.
  • Consider Two Outfits: Many couples opt for two looks – one more casual and one a bit dressier. This gives you variety in your photos. Think about a flowy dress and a nice button-down for one look, and perhaps jeans and cozy sweaters for another.
  • Accessorize Thoughtfully: Jewelry, scarves, hats, or a stylish watch can add personality to your outfits. But don't overdo it – a few key pieces are usually enough.
  • Think About Your Location: What you wear should make sense with your chosen backdrop. A glamorous gown might look out of place on a rustic hiking trail, while super casual wear might not fit a formal architectural setting.
  • Lay it All Out: A few days before your session, lay out your complete outfits, including shoes and accessories, to make sure you're happy with how everything looks together. Don't forget to iron or steam anything that needs it!
  • Shoes Matter: Consider both style and practicality. If we're exploring a location with uneven terrain, bring comfortable shoes to walk in, even if you change into heels for some shots.


What about my hair and makeup?

  • Professional vs. DIY: If your budget allows, consider professional hair and makeup. It can be a great confidence booster and artists know what looks best on camera. Many even offer wedding trials, which you could schedule for the day of your shoot.
  • Keep it You: Whether you go pro or DIY, aim for a look that still feels like you. You want to look polished, but recognizable.
  • Timing is Everything: If doing your own, give yourself plenty of time so you're not rushed.
  • Touch-up Kit: Bring essentials like lipstick/gloss, powder for shine, and hairspray for any needed touch-ups during the session.


What types of locations would be best?


The backdrop for your photos sets the mood.

  • Meaningful Places: Is there a spot that's special to your relationship? Perhaps where you had your first date, got engaged, or a place you both love to visit? Meaningful locations can add an extra layer of sentiment to your photos.
  • Consider the Vibe: Are you drawn to urban cityscapes, romantic gardens, rustic country vibes, or a cozy in-home session? Discuss your vision with your photographer – they often have great suggestions too!
  • Time of Day: Lighting is crucial in photography. "Golden hour" (the hour or so after sunrise or before sunset) provides soft, warm, and flattering light. Your photographer will likely recommend the best time for your chosen location.
  • Permits & Permissions: Some locations may require permits or have photography fees. It's always a good idea to check this in advance and communicate with your photographer if you'd like to shoot at a location that requires a permit.


Should we use any props?


Props can be a fun way to personalize your session, but they're definitely not a requirement.

  • Subtle & Meaningful: If you choose to use props, think about items that reflect your personalities or shared interests. This could be a cozy blanket, a bottle of champagne, your favorite coffee mugs, a vintage bicycle, or even your beloved pet!
  • Keep it Simple: Too many props can be distracting. One or two well-chosen items are usually plenty.
  • Discuss with Your Photographer: We can help you decide if props are a good fit and how to incorporate them naturally.

It's completely normal to feel a little nervous before being in front of the camera. Remember, your engagement session is about celebrating your love!

  • Trust Your Photographer: We're here to guide you! We'll help with posing and make you feel comfortable. You don't need to be a professional model.
  • Focus on Each Other: The most beautiful photos often happen when you forget the camera is there and simply interact with each other. Laugh, talk, snuggle – let your genuine connection shine through.
  • Make it a Date: Plan something fun for before or after your session. This can help you relax and be in a great mood.
  • Don't Overthink It: Try not to worry about an "awkward" pose or a stray hair. We'll capture plenty of amazing moments.
  • Communicate: If you have any specific shots in mind or any concerns, don't hesitate to share them with us beforehand or during the session.
  • Music: Sometimes I find playing music for a couple really sets the vibe you want to experience for your session. If you have any requests I will also be your DJ for the session.


What to bring?

  • Your Outfits (neatly packed just so they don't wrinkle:)
  • Touch-up Kit (lipstick, powder, hairspray)
  • Comfortable Walking Shoes (if needed for the location)
  • Water & Snacks (especially for longer sessions)
  • Any Props You've Decided On
